Dialogue adaptation

Importance of Adaptation in Dubbing

Dialogue adaptation is one of the most crucial phases of dubbing. The starting point is the script and the original language audio of an audiovisual product, and the endpoint is a translated and adapted script ready for the dubbing studio.

The translated scripts are adapted following the technical specifications required nationally and internationally, with indications of character names, pauses, intonations, and everything necessary for the dubbing director first and then the voice actor to best perform their work.

Our dialogue adapters have experience with different types of dialogue adaptation and are capable of translating and adapting scripts following the guidelines learned while working for dubbing studios.

Specifically, the services we offer include:

  • Documentary oversound dialogue adaptation.
  • Non-lip-sync rhythmic dialogue adaptation for reality shows, talent shows, and similar.
  • Lip-sync rhythmic dialogue adaptation for films, TV series, cartoons, soap operas, and similar.
  • Translation of scripts and screenplays intended for dialogue adaptation for dubbing.

Tradition and Innovation in Italian Dubbing

Tradition and Innovation in Italian Dubbing

In Italy, dubbing has a long tradition and remains the primary tool that audiences use to enjoy an audiovisual product, whether it's a film, a talent show, or a documentary. This is because, especially in the case of feature films and TV series, a well-executed adaptation gives us the illusion of watching a product in its original language.

Technical Details of Adaptation

The first phase is the translation of the script into the target language. The content must adhere closely to the original, and cultural references need to be correctly localized. In dialogue adaptation for dubbing, however, adherence is not only about the content; it is also necessary to respect the length of the lines in the original language and, in some cases, pay attention to the lip movements.

There are indeed several main types of dialogue adaptation for dubbing:

  • Voice-over: is the adaptation of video products such as documentaries, where there is a main narrating voice.
  • Non-lip-sync rhythmic or similar-synch: is a technique mainly used for reality shows and talent shows, where there are often fast-paced dialogues.
  • Lip-sync rhythmic or lip-synch: is the dialogue adaptation technique used for films, TV series, cartoons, soap operas.
